Mutual Fund vs ETF

There are many common things you can find in Mutual Funds and ETFs. It gives a good diversification opportunity to invest from both Mutual Funds and ETFs as they consist of many different assets. Though they are having similarities, they are having many differences. The major difference is ETFs can be traded on Intraday but Mutual Funds can be purchased at the end of each trading day only.

Mutual Funds first launched in 1924, while ETFs first launched relatively new, in January 1993.

Mutual Funds are actively managed, meaning a fund manager takes decisions on how to make fund allocations. But ETFs are generally passively managed on indices and specific sector indices only. Passive index funds make up a significant proportion of Mutual Funds’ Asset Under Management or AUM, as there is a growth of actively managed ETFs available for investors.

By the Numbers

The United States is the world’s largest market for Mutual Funds and ETFs accounting for 46.4% of the total world’s assets.

Two kinds of Mutual Funds

There are two  kinds of Mutual Funds: one is Open Ended Funds and another is Closed Ended Funds.

Open Ended Funds

In volume and Assets Under Management, these types of funds dominate the market place. There is no limit in this fund’s issuance. So as more investors buy into this fund more shares are issued.

Closed Ended Funds.

As investors’ demands grow, these funds do not issue more shares. Here prices are not determined by the Net Asset Value, but depends on investors’ demand.

 Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs)

ETFs can cost very less than one share’s price plus fees or commissions. As ETFs are passively managed, the capital gain tax are fewer than actively managed Mutual Funds.
